Tilicho Lake, Thorang La and Poon Hill Trek - 17 Days Detailed Itinerary

Arriving at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport is the first step in embarking on a journey through the heart of Nepal. The moment you step off the plane, you're greeted by the unmistakable scent of incense and a sense of excitement in the air. 

The airport itself is a bustling gateway to the city, with travelers from around the world coming to create new adventure stories. 

As you collect your luggage and clear customs, you'll be received by the warm welcome of your Trekking Group Leader or Our Office Representative and transfer you to the hotel. 

The drive from the airport to your hotel takes you through the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, where ancient temples and bustling markets coexist with the modern world. 

The journey is a sensory overload, with the honking of vehicles, the aroma of street food, and the vibrant colors of Nepal's vibrant culture.

One of the long drives of the trip: En route, the landscape transforms from fertile terraced fields to rugged hills, with the Marsyangdi River accompanying you along the way. First, we will be driving 173 km/107 miles to Besisahar, the prosperous town of the British Gorkhas where we will have our lunch. We further take a scenic drive through the village of Bahundanda. Shortly we get to the village of Jagat and climb to the village of Chamche and we ascend gradually to the village of Tal, the most beautifully positioned settlement at the banks of the Marshyangdi River. We now enter the district of Manang and another short drive will take us to the beautiful villages of Dharapani.

  • 7/8 hours’ drive to Besisahar. Today we drive early to skip any uncertainty of traffic jam on our slender highway.
  • Fabulous scenery and mountain view at the backdrop as you navigate through these new roads.
  • A lunch stop in one of the highway restaurants with its excellent food choices is very comforting.
  • From Besisahar further drive to the village of Dharpani is another fascination with so much to witness.
  • Despite a long drive, being at Dharapani, a beautiful rustic settlement will definitely add more excitement to your anticipation.

From Dharapani we start off with a gradual trial to Bagarchap and eventually get to another settlement of Danagyu. Next, we climb through the amazing woodland trail to the village of Timang for lunch. After lunch once again we start off with a gradual trail and drop all the way to Thanchok and finally reach the pleasing settlement of Chame, the administrative headquarters for Manang district.

Leaving Chame we cross the suspension bridge and walk a gradual trial with apple and peach orchard everywhere that will take us to the village of Talekhu. Now the valley starts opening up and we walk the broader version of the trail to Brathang, legend says that it used to be the settlement for Khampas (the Tibetan warriors). Soon we will walk the forested trail of pine and fir to Dhukure Pokhari (holy pond) for lunch. The next hour and a half of beautiful trail lands us in Pisang.

Today we start early to get to the small settlement of Ghyaru for the most stunning view. Vertical hike all the way to Ghyaru for the most graceful panoramic view of meadows and mountains. Gradual walk to Ngawal for Lunch. Ngawal, with its distinctive stone houses and winding streets, is a cultural gem in the region. The village is known for its Tibetan-influenced architecture and the ancient Gompa (monastery) that graces the hillside. From Ngawal, you can gaze upon the towering Annapurna peaks and savor a sense of tranquility in the high mountain terrain.

As you depart from Ngawal, you'll embark on a trail that weaves through alpine meadows and pristine landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Annapurna mountain range.

The path gently descends from Ngawal, passing through quaint villages and terraced fields where locals cultivate barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. The Marsyangdi River accompanies you for much of the way, its melodious flow serving as a constant companion. As you walk the easy gradual trail you will pass the ancient settlements of Munchi and Braga - a short stop here is worth it.

This picturesque village is known for its most phenomenal panoramic views, and distinctive Tibetan-influenced architecture, with flat-roofed stone houses.

Today we skip the main Annapurna circuit trail and take a different valley of Tilicho towards the west of Manang and walk the trail down to the river. After crossing a bridge over Kangsar Khola we walk the trail that eventually leads us to the village of Kangsar. We gradually ascend a steep trail past the monastery and chortens that give you the Tibetan Buddhism influence to Siri Kharka with an awesome view of Chulu.

Once again we walk the less-trodden trail through various glacial lakes towards Tilicho Base Camp. Despite today being more of an effortless walk it could be challenging rambling vigilantly on the landslide trail where there are many chances of rock fall. Your group leader will be giving you the necessary provision to walk on this technical landslide trail. Eventually, we get to the basic Tilicho base camp.

We start early today to get to the world’s highest lake, Tilicho and we start off with the initial vertical steep switchback ascent until we get to the ridge. On our way, we would see the Himalayan meadow basically a summer camp for the Yaks as they would skip the scorching heat of low land and walk all the way here for grazing. We walk a gradual trail till we get to a picturesque large lake settled at the foot of Tilicho Peak. This sacred lake also known as the ‘The Great Ice Lake’ as it remains frozen during winter is indeed phenomenal.

After our adventurous excursion, we will retrace our trail back to Siri Kharka.

Leaving Siri Kharka we descend to Khangsar Village past the ancient Buddhist monastery. Soon we leave the trail we took on our way up and take a different trial that would ultimately join the regular Annapurna circuit trial. After crossing the bridge we ascend to get to the mountain ridge and walk further to get to Yak Kharka (yak grazing pasture).

Today’s short walk starts with a gradual trail to the village of Letder. We continue with the gradual trail and cross a footbridge, a short steep climb to the ridge for a short break at the tea shop. Another 45-minute walk through the technical landslides trail takes us to the Thorong Phedi (base camp). Precaution is to be taken at landslide trial.

  • A very rewarding moment being at Phedi with an exceptional view.
  • Slow walking is recommended for health safety; listen to your leader for guidance over walking the technical landslide area.
  • Depending on your health and safety concerns your leader will decide on base camp or high camp.
  • Despite being very basic, being at Thorong Phedi with only a limited lodge is charming.
  • Another 45 min steep climb if you fancy staying overnight at the HIGH CAMP - take necessary advice from your Trek Leader

We start very early today to get over quickly and to skip the wind chill factor at the summit of the pass. The trail starts with a steep ascend to high camp and then gets gradual up till we get to the solitary isolated tea shop for a short break. We further climb to the pass, our ultimate goal and great achievement, and descend all the way down to Muktinath entering into a different district of Mustang. Muktinath is a highly venerated sacred place of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Buddhists.

After a relaxing night at Tatopani (Tato - Hot and Pani - Water in Nepali) the next morning we will drive to the high settlement of Chitre and a bit further - this depends on the season you are trekking. 

After this drive, we will short hike to the village of Ghorepani. Being at Ghorepani is a magical experience. This blue-roofed settlement is located amidst lush rhododendron forests and surrounded by towering peaks, Ghorepani is a picturesque village that serves as a gateway to some of the most spectacular trekking destinations.

In the evening, the anticipation builds as trekkers gather to embark on a short walk to Poon Hill for the sunset view. The trek to Poon Hill is an awe-inspiring journey through rhododendron forests and along stone-paved paths. As the sun descends behind the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, the sky transforms into a canvas of vivid colors, casting a warm and enchanting glow on the landscape.

  • PORTERS: The porter to trekker ratio is 1:2 - meaning 1 porter for every 2 trekkers. However, for groups larger than 4 trekkers, an additional porter is provided specifically to assist with hot water supply during the trek.

  • The trek can vary in length, but the standard route typically takes about 15 to 20 days to complete, covering around 160-230 kilometers (100-145 miles).

  • All foreign national requires two permits for this trip namely :

    • Annapurna  Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit – Cost – NPR 3000 / USD$25 Per Person – For SAARC nationals NPR 1000 Per Person – Locals are to pay NPR 100 Per Person.
    • TIMS Card (Trekking Information Management System) – Cost – NPR 2000 / USD$17 – The price for the SAARC nationals for TIMS card is NPR 300.

    However, children below 10 years old don’t require permits.

  • The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitudes and the Thorong La Pass crossing. Adequate physical preparation and acclimatization are essential.

    However, all our itineraries for Annapurna Circuit are designed so as to construct enough grounds for proper acclimatization making it more exhausting and achievable for anyone with sound fitness.

  • The best time to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek is: 

    • Pre-Monsoon Season i.e SPRING (March-May) and
    • Post-Monsoon Season i.e. AUTUMN (September-November) when the weather is generally clear, and the views are stunning.

    However, it can be done throughout the year with proper preparations.

  • Along the Annapurna Circuit Trek, you will find a variety of accommodation options ranging from basic lodges and teahouses to more comfortable guesthouses. Most places provide basic amenities such as beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms, especially at higher elevations.

    However, Nepal Pyramids uses family-oriented lodges which will finely accommodate the rest of our local crews and where hygiene is at its best than commercial lodges.

  • FOOD: There are numerous teahouses and lodges along the trail that offer a wide range of meals including local and international dishes. 

    DRINKING WATER: We strongly discourage the use of Plastic Mineral Water for environmental concerns and we are opposed to the use of disposable plastic bottles on any of our trips to Nepal Himalayas.

    With NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, our staff will supply you with appropriately boiled water every morning and evening for which at least 2 metal or plastic Nalgene bottles are recommended. In case you run out of the water provided you can always buy boiled and filtered water from the tea houses along the way at minimal charges.

  • Yes, altitude sickness can be a concern on the Annapurna Circuit Trek as you will be trekking to higher altitudes. It is important to acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and follow a gradual ascent to minimize the risk.

    Your Trek Leader is highly trained in terms of any altitude-related ailments and knows preventive measures - so please follow the guidelines of your Group Leader. Besides if the use of DIAMAX (ACETOZOLAMIDE) is highly recommended over 3000m elevation - 250mg per day. 

  • Yes, it is possible to do a shortened version of the Annapurna Circuit Trek by using transportation for some sections or taking alternative trails. This can be discussed and arranged with Nepal Pyramids - we are the masters in customizing Itineraries for convenience. 

  • There are no official age restrictions for the trek. However, individuals should have a good level of physical fitness and be able to handle moderate to strenuous hiking conditions. It is always advisable to consult a doctor before undertaking any strenuous physical activity, especially at higher altitudes.

  • The highest point on the standard circuit is the Thorong La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level.
