Essential Trip Information

Is there any risk of Altitude sickness while doing the EBC Helicopter Tour?

Yes, there is a risk of Altitude sickness while doing the EBC Helicopter Tour. The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour includes a brief stop and an opportunity to disembark the helicopter at Kala Patthar viewpoint, which sits at an elevation of 5,350 meters (17,550 feet). At this high altitude, there is a risk that passengers may develop symptoms of altitude sickness during their 10-15 minutes spent there.

Altitude sickness is caused by reduced oxygen availability and falling atmospheric pressure at high elevations. It typically takes more significant and prolonged exposure to high altitude than the brief Kala Patthar stopover to develop severe manifestations. However, even mild symptoms like headache, fatigue, and shortness of breath can occur.

To deal with any such risks and maximize passenger safety and comfort, supplemental oxygen cylinders are available on board the helicopters to provide relief if any passengers start exhibiting concerning signs of altitude sickness while at Kala Patthar. Given the very limited time spent at that highest elevation, the majority of passengers tolerate it without major issues.

While unlikely to become dangerously severe, vulnerable individuals may still develop mild symptoms during the stopover. Remaining properly hydrated, limiting exertion, and promptly alerting guides if you feel unwell are all recommended precautions.

Those with pre-existing medical conditions that could be complicated by altitude exposure may wish to consider alternative Everest sightseeing helicopter tours that do not land at elevations above 5,000 meters. Please consult with your doctor if you have any concerns about your fitness for this activity.

Our guides have extensive high-altitude experience to assist passengers, but avoiding prolonged exposure remains the best way to prevent altitude problems. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

WEIGHT CAPACITY LIMITS

All helicopters touring high-elevation terrain in Nepal have a maximum takeoff weight of 450kg from Kathmandu. However, landing weight capacity varies by altitude:

  • Syangboche (Everest View Hotel) - 3962m/13000 feet: 450kg
  • Pheriche - 4,200m/13,779 feet: 420kg
  • Kala Patthar landing at 5350m/17,552 feet: 220kg

Due to Kala Patthar's steep terrain and high elevation, the reduced 220kg landing weight frequently requires splitting passenger groups into two shuttle flights from Pheriche. One-half of the group will land first, disembark to explore, then reboard so the second group can land.

By necessity, we cannot accommodate all 4-5 passengers on a single flight to Kalapathar. We appreciate your understanding of these altitude-based weight restrictions for safe landings.
