Lower Manaslu Trek: 12-Day Eco Trail Through Gorkha, Barpak and Laprak

Discover the quieter side of the Manaslu region. The Lower Manaslu Trek is a scenic cultural trek through historic Gorkha, traditional Gurung villages, forested hills, mountain pastures, and spectacular mountain views.

Located in the historic Gorkha district, the Lower Manaslu Heritage Trail is one of the best choices for travelers. You will enjoy the equally dramatic views, beautiful landscapes, and traditional communities without committing to the demanding high altitudes of the Manaslu Circuit Trek via Larke Pass.

While thousands of trekkers do the high Manaslu Circuit every year, almost nobody walks this lower section of Manaslu. This trek offers a great advantage: authenticity, sharing trails with farmers, staying in local homes, and witnessing genuine traditions.

This 12-day journey is more about experiencing Nepal at a more intimate pace. This beautiful trek begins with a cable car ride and a visit to the Manakamana temple, a 'Wish-Fulfilling Goddess'. At Gorkha Bazaar, you will walk through the centuries-old Gorkha Durbar and visit the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah.

We will also visit the cave shrine of Gorakhnath Baba and pass through Sirandanda, a hilltop Hyolmo settlement known for its medicinal herbs. Overnight at the traditional Gurung village of Barpak and Laprak is simply magical. The highest overnight point is Nambai Kharka at 2,700m, and a walk to Darche Danda, an amazing vantage point, is another highlight.

With the Lower Manaslu Heritage Trail Trek, you walk through terraced farmland, forests, traditional settlements, and open pastures. Furthermore, you will stay at local homes, enjoy time with local families, and discover the history, legends, and mythology of the region.

Lower Manaslu Heritage Trail Trek is a great alternative for travelers looking for culture, nature, mountain scenery, and a quieter trekking experience.

Why Trek the Lower Manaslu Region?

The Lower Manaslu Trek offers something different from the other popular, commercial, and overcrowded traditional trekking destinations in Nepal.

To experience the Manaslu region, you do not need to cross a 5,000m Larkya La Pass. The Lower Manaslu Heritage Trail Trek takes you to the dramatic lower section of the Manaslu where mountains, culture, local communities, forests, and Himalayan experience come together.

What the Lower Manaslu Region has to offer:

  • Historic Gorkha and its royal heritage
  • The sacred Manakamana Temple
  • Traditional Gurung and other hill communities
  • Local homestay experiences
  • Terraced farming landscapes
  • Forest trails and mountain ridges
  • Barpak and Laprak villages
  • Nambai Kharka's open pastureland
  • Darche Danda panoramic viewpoint
  • Sita Cave
  • Views toward the Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Annapurna, and surrounding ranges

The Lower Manaslu Trek is not a trek that circles around one famous mountain or one high mountain pass. In fact, it is an experience that develops gradually through heritage, villages, people, forests, culture, genuine mountain lifestyle, and spectacular views.

This combination makes the Lower Manaslu Trek particularly attractive for travelers who want to skip the overcrowded destinations and want to experience an authentic trekking experience.

Lower Manaslu Trek Permits (No Restricted Area Permit Needed)

Do You Need MCAP/MRAP/OR ACAP for the Lower Manaslu Trek? Here's the Real Answer.

No, you do not require any of the above permits for the Lower Manaslu Trek.

Like the Manaslu Circuit Trek, the Lower Manaslu Trek does not pass through the restricted area or the Manaslu Conservation Area. So, you do not need MRAP, MCAP, ACAP, or TIMS for this route.

What do you need to enter the Lower Manaslu Region?

What you do need is a local area entry permit. Like a Gorkha District Conservation/Entry Permit issued by the local rural municipalities. The Lower Manaslu Trail passes through the rural municipalities of Barpak, Sulikot, and Dharche.

However, all these local permits are to be paid on the trail itself, which will be smoothly arranged by your trek leader. No extra costs required; with us, it's all paid and taken care of.

At Kurintar, take the cable car toward Manakamana Temple, one of Nepal's best-known pilgrimage destinations.

After visiting the temple and enjoying the surrounding views, continue toward the trail.

We will have lunch nearby, and shortly after we will walk past Bakeswari Mahadev Temple and the small cave shrine associated with Lakhan Thapa before descending through Tinmane Bhanjyang to Ghairung, your first homestay village.

The walking section takes you through rural settlements, temples, and forested hills before reaching Ghairung.

This is your first opportunity to experience the community-based character of the Lower Manaslu route.

Overnight in a Ghairung homestay.

  • Altitude: 1,170m
  • Accommodation: Local Homestay
  • Walking Hour: 5/7 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After arriving, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the atmosphere of this historic hill town.

Overnight in Gorkha Bazaar.

Today is dedicated to discovering Gorkha.

Visit Gorkha Durbar, situated above the bazaar, and explore the historic surroundings and viewpoints. Gorkha Durbar: The hilltop palace from which King Prithvi Narayan Shah launched the unification of Nepal, and descend to the nearby Gorakhnath Cave.

Continue your cultural exploration with the Gorkha Museum, home to royal artifacts, weaponry, and archival photographs tracing the kingdom's origins.

Visit other important heritage sites in the area. This day provides an important historical dimension to the trek before you return to the quieter mountain villages.

Spend the evening relaxing in Gorkha Bazaar and preparing for the next trekking section.

Overnight in Gorkha Bazaar.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodage
  • Walking Hour: Sightseeing
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today the landscape begins to change as you leave the historic town behind and head toward the hills.

The route climbs through rural settlements and forested sections toward Bachek before continuing upward to Sirandanda, a Hyolmo settlement famous for medicinal herbs, organic tea gardens, and sunrise views over Manaslu.

As you gain elevation, the views gradually open toward the surrounding hills and Himalayan ranges.

Leave Sirandanda and continue toward Barpak.

The trail passes through smaller villages, forests, and river valleys before reaching the impressive settlement of Barpak.

Barpak is one of the cultural highlights of the trek, with traditional houses, narrow village lanes and a strong Gurung community identity.

It is a striking Gurung, Tamang, Sunar, and Ghale village of stone-roofed houses and the birthplace of Victoria Cross recipient Capt. Gaje Ghale.

Spend the evening exploring the village or simply relaxing with your host family.

Laprak is known for its traditional Gurung culture and dramatic mountain setting.

Take time to walk through the village and observe the local architecture and daily life.

Overnight in Laprak.

Today is the biggest day of the trek, taking you to the highest overnight sleeping point of the trek.

From Laprak, the trail climbs steadily for 4 hours toward the open pasturelands of Nambai Kharka, the highest sleeping point of the trek.

The change in scenery is striking. The dense settlements and cultivated terraces begin to give way to wider mountain landscapes and open grazing areas.

At approximately 2,700 meters, Nambai Kharka provides a peaceful mountain setting and excellent opportunities for photography.

Because accommodation here is basic, this is one of the nights when travelers should be prepared for simple facilities.

Overnight at Nambai Kharka.

  • Altitude: 2,700m
  • Accommodation: Local Homestay
  • Walking Hour: 4/5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is one of the most scenic days of the trek.

Leave Nambai Kharka and climb toward Darche Danda (3,220m), an important viewpoint along the route.

On a clear morning, the ridge provides expansive views toward the surrounding Himalayan ranges. It is a vantage point from which you can have panoramic views of more than twenty Himalayan peaks at sunrise, including Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, etc.

After enjoying the viewpoint, the trail now steeply descends through changing vegetation and hillside terrain toward another Gurung village of Tallo Thotneri.

The contrast between the high ridge and the lower village landscape makes this a particularly rewarding day of walking.

  • Altitude: 3,220m
  • Accommodation: Local Homestay
  • Walking Hour: 6/7 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

  • Photographers
  • Travelers combining trekking with other Nepal destinations
  • Visitors who don't want to spend two weeks on a trekking itinerary

Lower Manaslu Trek Difficulty

The Lower Manaslu Trek is moderate. There is no technical climbing, but reasonable fitness is a must.

The route includes:

  • Long walking days
  • Undulating sections
  • Stone steps and uneven trails
  • Forest paths
  • Rural mountain terrain
  • Limited facilities in some villages
  • Basic homestay accommodation
  • Significant elevation changes between certain sections

A reasonable level of fitness will make the trek much more enjoyable. Pre-trek physical training like regular walking, hiking, cycling, running, or stair training before the trek can be very helpful. Moreover, you should be comfortable walking for around 5/7 hours, 15/20km on a developing trekking trail.

Best Time for the Lower Manaslu Trek

Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the most ideal seasons for the Lower Manaslu trek. The hills become greener, rhododendrons bloom, and the weather is generally favorable for walking.

Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is now considered one of the best periods, which is also popularly known as the Festival Season. After the monsoon, the atmosphere is clearer, and mountain visibility can be excellent.

Winter (December to February)
The winter season is now getting very trendy for Nepal Trekking. Despite being cold, the winter season is becoming more popular as it guarantees the most favourable weather with unobstructed views.

Monsoon (June to August)
The monsoon season is not recommended for Lower Manaslu Trekking. Rain can make trails muddy and slippery, while landslides can affect road conditions and transportation.

Accommodation on the Lower Manaslu Trek

Accommodation is pretty basic on the Lower Manaslu Heritage Trail, and it changes as we proceed further to the rural settlements.

However, in Kathmandu and Gorkha, you will be provided with comfortable hotels. But further along the trail, accommodation will start being basic, with locals house and typical homestay facilities.

Homestays are certainly a beautiful experience as they allow you to:

  • Meet local families
  • Taste home-cooked Nepali food
  • Learn about village traditions
  • Experience rural mountain life
  • Support community-based tourism

Facilities are simpler in remote locations, so travelers should be prepared for basic rooms and shared facilities.

Food During the Trek

During the Lower Manaslu Trek, meals are generally simple, but fresh and filling.

Food choices may include:

  • Dal bhat (typical Nepali food)
  • Rice and vegetables
  • Noodles (instant and homemade)
  • Thukpa (homemade noodles)
  • Pasta
  • Eggs
  • Bread (locally made - toast bread can be rare)
  • Pancakes
  • Potatoes (organic)
  • Seasonal vegetables (organic)
  • Tea and coffee (not beans)

Food choices become more limited in remote homestays.
