History and Significance of Tengboche Monastery:
Tengboche Monastery is situated at an altitude of 3,867 meters / 12,687 feet, and it is considered one of the most important monasteries in the Everest region. It is not the oldest monastery, but it is one of the most active one that holds great religious and cultural significance. The Tengboche monastery is locally known as Dawa Choling Gompa, which is a central hub for the Tibetan Buddhist Sherpa People of the Khumbu region.
The legend states that the monastery was founded in 1916 by LAMA GULU, who was from the region itself. Ngawang Tenzing Norbu, an incarnation monk from the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet, played a significant role in the establishment of Tengboche Monastery.
At the entrance of the monastery, you will find the FOOTPRINT over the rock, which belongs to Lama Sangwa Dorje. Lama Sangwa Dorje is believed to be the spiritual ancestor and the key figure to introduce Buddhism in the Everest Region. It is also said that he predicted the current Tengboche area to be highly sacred and blessed by the divine. He meditated here, and centuries later, Tengboche Monastery was built.
However, the Tengboche monastery, built by Lama Gulu, was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1934. It was later rebuilt with the help of the local community and international supporters. Unfortunately, it was again damaged by a fire in 1989. Once again, the Sherpa community, with the help of international organizations and donors, came together to reconstruct the monastery.
The Tengboche Monastery is a crucial religious center for the Sherpa community and an important stop for trekkers and mountaineers in the Everest region.

We will conclude our first day with a short hike to the beautiful village of Phakding, where we will spend the night. The next day, we ascend to the Capital city of the Khumbu region, Namche Bazaar, going over several suspension bridges.
