3 Annapurna Viewpoints Trek Summary:

3 Annapurna Viewpoints Trek basically starts from the Capital City of Kathmandu, the city of temples. Next, we drive to Pokhara situated at an elevation of 820 m/ 2,690 ft. Pokhra is the second biggest and the most gorgeous Lake City in Nepal located to the west of Kathmandu.

Pokhara was once the home of the Hippies where they enjoyed their distinctive lifestyle with fun and bliss. Now Pokhara is the second home to tourists from around the world which is very captivating with great beauty, a clean environment, and stunning mountain views.

Soon we will be walking the scenic native trail that will lead us to the cultural village of Ghandruk. Ghandruk happens to be one of the biggest villages inhabited by the tribe called GURUNG also popularly known as the “TAMU”. Gurungs are the ethnic group living in the high hills of Western Nepal with their own distinct culture and language.

Furthermore, their belief system has a beautiful blend of Buddhism, Hinduism, Shamanism, and their own individual Cult – this individual cult is basically worshipping their ancestors and is kept very secret and sacred.

Progressively, we walk the densely forested trail towards Tadapani which gives us a mystical presence. Tadapani is a very small town with limited lodges and is basic but the view of the mountains is incredible. The sunrise view in the morning right from your room window is something very mind-boggling.

We walk further into the very untouched valley of Annapurna through the mystic woodland Rhododendron trail. The mountain trail onwards is so magical that trekkers have actually given different fictional nicknames like the “Lord of the Rings trail” etc.

1. Muldai Viewpoint (3637 m / 11,932 feet):

From Tadapani we take a different forested trail which is another beautiful adventure. After 5 hour's walk, we get to a very small teahouse settlement of Dobato. The next morning with an early wake-up call a short walk leads us to our first viewpoint, Muldai viewpoint.

In clear morning weather, Muldai is certainly very worth it. The mountain view with the morning sunrise is absolutely amazing. We recommend not to skip your early morning wake-up for the sake of your few minutes' snooze or you will be missing a heavenly experience.

2. Poon Hill (3200 m / 10,498 feet):

After the exciting morning, we leave Dobato and trek further to Ghorepani. We descend the newly established trail through the dramatic forest setting towards Deurali. As we walk the ridge line of the high hills we see Mt. Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest mountain in the world-dominating the skyline.

Finally, we reach the blue-roofed beautiful town of Ghorepani. Ghorepani has indeed a very beautiful history of being a popular junction during the time of the "Salt Trade Era" between Tibet and Nepal. In fact, this beautiful town was a perfect place for the traders to feed water to their horses and also to finish the barter trading. This is the reason why it assumes the name "Ghore as Horse" and "Pani as Water".

The next morning we will head out to our second viewpoint, Poon Hill which gives you another grandiose view of the mountains and landscape which is nowhere to be found. Poon Hill is a 45-minute steep hill walk from Ghorepani.

Trekkers start earliest in the morning to witness the most spectacular sunrise view. Trekkers require a small entrance fee and once you get to the top you can always buy yourself a hot beverage to enjoy the chill and the view.

3. Mohare Danda (3,200 m/ 10, 498 feet):

Subsequently, we will be on our quest to our last viewpoint, the Mohare Danda. Mohare Danda is a 3 to 4 hours walk from Poon Hill. Since this Viewpoint is pretty new in comparison to Poon Hill and Muldai Mohare Danda doesn't necessarily have an established trail.

So if you are all by yourself or trekking as a FIT, it's highly recommended that you take someone who knows the trail to Mohare Danda. Once again the trail to this Viewpoint cruises through the forested trail which is genuinely off the beaten track.  Mohare Danda, besides the mountains, gives you a really dramatic picture of the landscapes and hills. This viewpoint is furnished with too many images for professional photographers to showcase.

The most significant highlight of this 3 Annapurna Viewpoints Trek is the spectacular sunrise and sunset view.

Besides, it furnishes a grandiose view of:

  • Kali Gandaki (The World Deepest Gorge),
  • Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m),
  • Mt. Annapurna I (8091m),
  • Mt. Tukuche (6920m),
  • Mt. Dhampus (6012m),
  • Mt. Nilgiri (6940m),
  • Mt. Annapurna Fang (7647m),
  • Mt. Annapurna South (7219m),
  • Mt. Hiunchuli (6441m),
  • Mt. Gangapurna (7454m), and
  • Mt. Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail) (6993m).

Eventually, we get back to the beautiful city of Pokhara to chill out. Pokhara offers ample outdoor activities that include lake boating, short walk, paragliding, zip line, bungee jumping, etc.

As we drive this winding road at every turn, jaw-dropping vistas will reveal themselves to us. The higher we climb, the more stunning views become even more dramatic as the mighty Himalayas move closer. These snow-capped peaks and towering giants stand tall as a protector over the valley. The Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, the majestic Fishtail, and Lamjung Himal envelop the horizon completely.

The blue sky contrasted exquisitely with the icy white summits in a truly magical vision. After passing through traditional villages, and terraced fields hugging the mountainsides, we eventually descend the snaking roads and will arrive in Birethanti, "The Land of The Braves". We will take a quick break to verify our permits before continuing our drive to the cultural village of Kimche. Though we could have driven directly to Ghandruk, we opted to hike the remainder of the first day, allowing our muscles to adjust to the mountainous terrain.

Ghandruk, the biggest GURUNG village is the beating heart of this vibrant Gurung community, where we will spend our first night in the mountains. After a hearty lunch, we set off to explore the surrounding villages and explore the ANCIENT TOWN, the root of now Ghandruk.

As we leave the traditional Gurung village of Ghandruk, we gradually enter the trail furnished by a dramatic forest setting. Today's trek leads us through lush woodlands to reach the tiny settlement of Tadapani, aptly named "Far Water" for its sense of remoteness nestled deep in the Annapurna wilderness. The 7.5 km hike to Tadapani from Ghandruk is along gentle, rolling trails that wind through the shaded refuge of Maple, Oak, and Rhododendron forests. Under the beating sun, the walk provides pleasant relief from heat and fatigue.

We continue our enchanting hike through the sea of rhododendron flowers, glimpsing the mighty Himalayan peaks piercing the sky between the towering trees. By mid-afternoon, we arrive at the small basic settlement of Tadapani with its few small teahouses - our cozy abode for the night.

As the sun dips behind the mountains, the sky and snowy mountains ignite in a glorious sunset. As stars begin glittering across the darkening sky, we make our way to the teahouse porches for the brilliant sunset view. Spread before us is a breathtaking painting of the sacred Machapuchare (Mt. Fishtail) alongside the regal peaks of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. We retire to the cozy dining hall with its crackling fireplace, sip hot drinks, connect to WiFi, and lose ourselves to the majesty of the mountains.

Today we will enjoy this dramatic panorama with our breakfast in alfresco style in the open, soaking in the majesty.

Progressively, we will set out on the enchanting "Lord of the Rings" forest trail for our next destination, Dobato which is 7.9 km from Tadapani. Towering rhododendrons, oaks, and maples construct a lush shelter over us, protecting us from the harsh mountain sun. As we gradually ascend through this most stunning enchanting forested trail, we arrive at the tiny villages of Meshar. We will continue on our ascend to Isharu for a refreshing Nepali lunch and of course a relaxing break. After lunch, we will resume our peaceful forest walk.

Shortly after a few minutes of the hike, we will trek through the most gorgeous trails alongside pure mountain faces. You will also encounter a unique style trail, nicknamed “Stream Trail” which in the monsoon literally floods. We eventually reach little Dobato, a remote mountain settlement with just two small teahouses nestled in the undulating foothills. We rise at the earliest in the morning and hike up to the Muldai viewpoint, rewarded with unbelievable 360-degree vistas as the first light kisses the mighty Himalayas. Before us, Annapurna, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and the iconic Machapuchare glow in the sunrise. We also gaze down at the Kali Gandaki Gorge - the world's deepest river valley.

After breakfast, we set out on the NEWEST TREKKING TRAIL to Ghorepani. This trail was built very recently so not many walk this new trail. For about 4 hours we walk stunning rhododendron, maple, and oak forests before entering the protected sanctuary of Ghorepani, home to the largest rhododendron forest in the world. Ghorepani has served as one of the crucial trading points for traders during the SALT TRADE ERA between Nepal and Tibet. This Nepali word Ghorapani or Ghodepani is truly translated as "Horse-Water," where the traders stopped over and fed their horses and cattle with water.

Why always opt for sunrise only Ghodepani or Ghorepani is very popular for SUNSET VIEW. The sunset views from Poon Hill are legendary, revealing sweeping vistas of Himalayan giants - the Annapurna range, Nilgiri peaks, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare and the mighty Worlds Deepest Gorge, Kali Gandaki

  • Altitude: 3,637m/11,932 feet

Departing Ghorepani, we hike up to Poon Hill once more before trekking on a lesser-traveled trail westward. The route to Mohare Danda remains largely unexplored, less trodden, and untouched yet it delivers you the most enchanting forest trail. With its beauty and tranquility, it delivers you the most beautiful and peaceful trekking experience. As we ramble through this magical woodland, we will encounter a lone teashop dramatically situated with spellbinding views - a quick tea break proving utterly worthwhile.

Shortly after, our trail ascends a ridge, cruising through lush rhododendron forests along the ridgeline, a phenomenal path where you can walk for ages. Eventually, we arrive at Mohare Danda, home to one of the region's largest community lodges. The payoff for our remote trek is grand - Mohare Danda offers the best vistas compared to all previous vantage points. We relax with hot tea, soaking in the scenery, being sure not to miss yet another blazing sunset and the glittering dawn revealing the Himalayan peaks.

TODAYS TRAIL YOU ARE WALKING IS VERY NEW:

This newly opened section of trail holds pristine wonders. We rise early for unparalleled sunrise vistas. After breakfast, we begin descending the trail walking the virgin land.

As a newfound path, most of the trekking section is an untamed state that is void of any safety rails along lofty cliffsides. We ask all our travelers to remain fully alert and attentive on these edges, appreciating the raw beauty as well as being cautious as you walk the ridge line. By minding each step, we allow this young trail to unfold its splendors for generations to come.

Further along, as the trail matures, so do the steep pitches, revealing gentler landscapes to explore. We eventually come across a lone teahouse with the name Appa Lodge, a welcome break, before descending into lush pine, maple, and oak forests. Gradually, we arrive at the traditionally built village of Ulleri for a nourishing lunch.

Soon after lunch, saying goodbye to the charming Annapurna foothills, we walk a short distance further and drive the remaining 2.5 /3 hours back to Pokhara, The dream city.

As our mountain flight soars up in the sky it cruises over the majestic Himalayan giants once again giving us ample time to say goodbye. We will further soak ourselves in their snow-capped magnificence and picturesque valleys one last time.

Suddenly, the vibrant expanse of Kathmandu appears below. The ancient temples and the urban buildings shine like gold as we descend, bidding our mountain sanctuaries a fond farewell.
