Besides, the expedition also includes the crossing of the iconic Thorong La Pass at  5,416m / 17,769 feet.

This trip is also very spiritual as it takes you deep into the realm of Tibetan Buddhism and a visit to the most sacred temple of Muktinath. Trip Profile:

Our Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey begins with a scenic drive to Dharapani along the ancient Annapurna Circuit trail. This ancient Annapurna Circuit trail has certainly witnessed centuries of trade, pilgrimage, and adventure. As we drive the scenic Marshyangdi Valley you will witness lush subtropical forests and traditional villages with ancient terraced farmlands.

The next day we will start our first hike to the village of Chame. As we walk the Marshyangdi Valley you will be taken deeper into the landscape that has stood with time. Though the jeepable roadway has been built till Manang, we can skip most of this roadway and take the trekking trail.

Chame is a picturesque village that is also the main headquarters of the Manang District. It is certainly one of the biggest and most prosperous towns. However, as you walk the gullies you will still witness the ancient architecture and the rustic way of life people still live.

Leaving Chame the next day we gradually leave the tree line area and walk the more Himalayan alpine area. We will stay overnight at Upper Pisang from where the view is phenomenal. After Pisang, our stay will be at the most picturesque village of Ngawal at an elevation of 3660 meters. You will have a grandiose view of Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Manaslu, Tilicho Peak, etc. We will spend an extra day in this gorgeous village of Ngawal for acclimatization purposes and do the acclimatization hike.

Beyond Ngawal, we will leave the regular trekking trail and enter into the realm of profound peacefulness and solitude. Here, the travelers will experience the landscape more pristine and raw. Gradually we will get to Yak Kharka, an area less traveled by tourists and still remains unexplored.

Now, gradually we will approach further towards the more pristine landscape of Chulu Far East Base Camp. As you walk this unexplored hidden valley you will witness Bharal (blue sheep), crystal-clear streams, barren world of rock and ice. We will be camping and everything will be organized before your arrival at the base camp. The camping set includes two-member sharing tents, Kitchen tents, Dining tents, toilet tents, etc. However, the camping privileges also vary on the size of the group.

Eventually, we will head out to summit the Chulu Far East Peak. The technical sections of the climb require careful navigation through crevassed terrain and steep snow slopes. The summit push typically starts in the earliest in morning in the dark with headlamps.

After the summit, we head back down to the prosperous town of Manang and proceed further to go over the iconic Thorong La Pass. After the pass, we will descend down to the most sacred town of Muktinath. After Muktinath, we will walk further to the windy valley of Jomsom and fly to the Lake City of Pokhara the next day. The trip concludes with a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world's deepest gorge.

Going over the Thorong La Pass 5,416 m / 17,769 feet:

Another big highlight of the Chulu Far East Expedition is going over the Thorong La Pass, the highest trekking pass in the world. Thorong La stands at a height of 5,416 meters and played a crucial role during the Salt Trade Era. The incredible Thorong La Pass is the iconic high-altitude mountain pass that connects the Manang and Mustang districts.

It stands as a bridge between these two different districts which are unique and have diverse characteristics. The pass offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri ranges, and Mustang peaks. Usually, we go over the Thorong La earliest in the morning in the dark to avoid afternoon winds and ensure clear views from the summit.

Combination of both teahouse and camping experience:

Chulu Far East Expedition delivers you with both TEAHOUSE and CAMPING experience. It presents you with the best of two different worlds, the cozy comfort of teahouses and the experience of wilderness camping. This expedition is certainly designed to provide you with a complete Himalayan experience in Nepal.

  • Teahouse Experience:

Our Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey starts with the iconic Annapurna Circuit trek. Along this classical circuit trail, you will be staying in local traditional teahouses which are basically family-oriented. These local teahouses in the mountains give you an authentic local experience. The teahouses are indeed the extension of their own houses which got improvised with the coming of tourism. This is the reason why all teahouses are in the heart of the traditional Annapurna villages.

It is certainly very fascinating to stay in these local teahouses at the base of high mountains with rustic surroundings. These cozy teahouses provide simple beds and shared dining halls, but delicious meals are prepared with local ingredients and are organic. It is indeed sensational to sit around the warm chimney in the evening and listen to the legends and share your stories.

  • Wilderness Camping Experience:

Once leave the village of Ngawal we will start heading towards the Chulu Base Camp. As we progress towards the wilderness of the mountain to summit the Chulu Far East Peak our accommodations switch from teahouse to Wilderness Camping. Since there are no teahouse facilities at the base camp and onwards we will be camping which becomes your new home. But it will certainly be a new experience to camp in the serenity of the mountains and to enjoy the freshly cooked meals. Imagine sitting outside with a cup of hot steaming tea in a peaceful environment surrounded by the soaring mountains away from the commercial trekking routes. This camping in the wilderness actually brings you closer to the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Our tents will be set up against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and here you can enjoy your solitude and simply meditate in peace. Unlike teahouse trekking here you can get together with your expedition team and prepare meals or laugh at the kitchen. What beats the teahouse trekking is witnessing the night sky which you can only enjoy at camping. There shall be no artificial lights to overshadow the natural starry lights nor the crowd of people to intrude on your solitude.

                                    Essential Trip Information

Best time to climb Chulu Far East Peak:

In Nepal, the traditional prime seasons for climbing any peak have always been spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In similar ways, we still consider the Spring and Autumn seasons favorable for Chulu Far East Peak, 6,059m as well.

These two traditional seasons are believed to offer stable weather and moderate temperatures. However, the biggest issue now is climate change which is noticeably reshaping Nepal’s Trekking Seasons.

Spring Spring brings longer daylights and warmer temperatures it has always been the most prominent season for climbing mountains in Nepal. No wonder mountaineers do high mountain expeditions in Spring including Mount Everest Expedition and Manaslu Expedition. But the spring is not delivering the weather as it used to be. The late Autumn season these days is becoming more noteworthy for its stable conditions.

Now with the Climate Change, Winter (December-February) is increasingly becoming practicable for climbing peaks in Nepal. Though temperature and chill factors can be very challenging they can always be dealt with proper gears. This may be the reason why the local climbers these days favor winter climbing due to stable weather and a guaranteed window to get to the summit.

                                    Climbing Difficulty:

Climbing Chulu Far East Peak (6,059m) is challenging and presents technical mountain climbing challenges. Chulu Far East expedition is very often compared to the famous Island Peak in terms of technicality. However, it is not as busy as Island Peak and offers a more serene climbing experience to the mountaineers. The remote location of Chulu Far East and fewer climbers provide a typical wilderness experience and an authentic high-altitude adventure.

Being a less traveled peak, Chulu Far East retains a distinct and very untouched character as compared to Island Peak or Mera Peak in the Everest region.

Though Chulu Far East is only 6059 meters it requires solid mountaineering skills to navigate its terrain. All essential climbing gear is mandatory including crampons, climbing harnesses, ice axes, fixed ropes, etc. This combination of technical climbing and pristine wilderness makes Chulu Far East an excellent alternative to the more commercial peaks of Nepal.

Overnight at the Sacred Muktinath 3,800 m/12,467 feet

This trip after being a Himalayan adventure is also a spiritual journey. After climbing Chulu Far East we will cross the Thorong La Pass which will take us to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The name itself suggests it is a place of liberation. Thousands of Hindus and Buddhists visit Muktinath every year seeking MOKSHA (salvation). The temple represents a harmonious blend of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal and how they co-exist in harmony.

Muktinath features the famous temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu with 108 water spouts. It also includes an ancient monastery, a huge Buddha statue, The Eternal Flames, etc. The visit to the Lord of Liberation is worth it.

                                    Jomsom 2,720 m/8,923 feet:

We will celebrate our last night at Jomsom, the administrative headquarters of Mustang District. It is a beautiful town surrounded by arid Tibet-like hills and the soaring Nilgiri mountain.

Jomsom is very popularly known as the Windy Valley of Nepal due to its strong winds. It is also known for apple orchards and the Thakali People who are known for their unique culture and delicious Dal Bhat (Nepali Traditional Food.

Jomsom offers stunning views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri peaks and has an airport that is the second most popular mountain airport after Lukla airport in Everest. Being the last night with our crew members we will have dinner together, and celebrate our achievement through local songs and dancing.

Flying through the World’s Deepest Gorge.

Our trip concludes with a scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. Experience the breathtaking mountain flight through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest gorge. This dramatic 20-minute flight cruises through the gorge between the towering massifs of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

As you fly over this gorge you will observe the range of snowcapped Annapurna mountain range, the lush subtropical valleys, vibrant hills, and cultural settlements. The view of the fierce flowing Kali Gandaki River making its way to the gorge looks very fascinating. Eventually, before landing at the finest airport of Pokhara you will witness the holy Mt. Machhapuchare (Mount Fishtail) soaring in the blue sky showing its dominance. The view of Mt. Fishtail and the range of Annapurna massif to either side is really fascinating.

Explore the enchanting city of Pokhara 827m:

Pokhara is the second-largest city and it was recognized as Nepal's Tourism Capital in 2024. It is popularly known as the Lake City since Pokhara sits beside the serene Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range and Mt. Fishtail as its backdrop.

After the Chulu Far East Expedition and being cut out from all civilization for weeks, it is indeed very soothing to get back to luxury. While at Pokhara you will have numerous adventure sports options including Bungee jumping, Zip-lining, Boating, Paragliding, etc. You can also simply relax and enjoy at the lakeside with a relaxing spa or shopping.

A short hike or a drive to the World Peak Pagoda or the second-tallest Shiv Statue at Pumdikot is worth it. These vantage points give you the best aerial view of Pokhara city and the best panoramic view of the snowcapped mountain range that dominates Pokhara city.

                                    A Note on Mountain Safety:

We request all our partners that due to the unpredictability of the mountains and the uncertainty our experienced guides and trek leaders hold the authority to execute changes. They have every right to modify the itinerary being flexible under demanding circumstances, weather, physical wellness, or natural events that are beyond our control.

Though our itineraries are crafted carefully and are led by professionals, the remote landscapes we explore may occasionally require new updates and transformations. We are always flexible to any changes that would benefit the entire crew members and our planning framework is just a script that can be revised anytime.

This flexibility that we have is actually born from decades of experience ensuring the safety of the overall crew members. However, all changes and flexibility will be implemented after the proper elucidation and consent from the group.

Risk of Altitude Sickness at Chulu Far East Peak Climbing:

Yes, there is a risk of altitude sickness while doing Chulu Far Ease Peak climbing. While climbing Chulu Far East you can get to a height of 6059 meters which is 19, 978 feet. Getting to this elevation is potentially risky for altitude sickness. As you go higher things can be tricky because the air gets very thin and you need to adapt to this thin-air environment.

AMS or acute mountain sickness can develop into life-threatening HACE and HAPE. However, there are ways to prevent High altitude sickness while doing high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

But the good news is, the Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey starts with the Annapurna Circuit trek which starts from quite a low elevation. Our itinerary is designed with a slow ascent that will help your body to adapt to the high altitude environment gradually.

Nevertheless, the Annapurna Circuit trek is itself designed with gradual ascent giving you enough time to acclimatize into thin air and create more red blood cells that help carry oxygen.

Furthermore, the things you can do to adapt are:

                                    • Walk slowly, ascend slowly, and do not rush
                                    • Listen to the guidelines of your Trek leader
                                    • Maintain your body with adequate fluid
                                    • Keep yourself warm
                                    • Over the counter, you can take Diamox (acetazolamide)
