What makes this expedition stand out from the rest is the combination of peak climbing thrill and trekking the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most celebrated treks and has been considered the Number-One trekking destination in departed years. Besides, the expedition also includes the crossing of the iconic Thorong La Pass at  5,416m / 17,769 feet.

This 21-day Chulu Far East Peak Climbing adventure takes you through the most prominent Annapurna Circuit Trail. This trail is famous for its diverse landscapes that change dramatically every day. You will witness the transformation from lush green forests and terraced rice fields to an alpine Himalayan meadow to an arid, high-altitude desert.

Furthermore, the trail cruises through the ancient Salt Trade Route that connected Tibet and Nepal centuries ago. The trekkers will have diverse experiences of going through ancient traditional villages, climbing peaks, and crossing high mountain passes.

This trip is also very spiritual as it takes you deep into the realm of Tibetan Buddhism and a visit to the most sacred temple of Muktinath. As you trek into the region you will have ample opportunity to visit some of the most prominent ancient monasteries and temples that will give you a rich history of the region's culture and heritage.

Significantly, summiting Chulu Far East Peak adds an exciting challenge to your journey. Trip Profile:

Our Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey begins with a scenic drive to Dharapani along the ancient Annapurna Circuit trail. This ancient Annapurna Circuit trail has certainly witnessed centuries of trade, pilgrimage, and adventure. As we drive the scenic Marshyangdi Valley you will witness lush subtropical forests and traditional villages with ancient terraced farmlands.

The next day we will start our first hike to the village of Chame. As we walk the Marshyangdi Valley you will be taken deeper into the landscape that has stood with time. Though the jeepable roadway has been built till Manang, we can skip most of this roadway and take the trekking trail.

Chame is a picturesque village that is also the main headquarters of the Manang District. It is certainly one of the biggest and most prosperous towns. However, as you walk the gullies you will still witness the ancient architecture and the rustic way of life people still live.

Leaving Chame the next day we gradually leave the tree line area and walk the more Himalayan alpine area. We will stay overnight at Upper Pisang from where the view is phenomenal. After Pisang, our stay will be at the most picturesque village of Ngawal at an elevation of 3660 meters. You will have a grandiose view of Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Manaslu, Tilicho Peak, etc. We will spend an extra day in this gorgeous village of Ngawal for acclimatization purposes and do the acclimatization hike.

Beyond Ngawal, we will leave the regular trekking trail and enter into the land of profound peacefulness and solitude. Here, the travelers will experience the landscape more pristine and raw. Gradually we will get to Yak Kharka, an area less traveled by tourists and still remains unexplored.

Now, gradually we will approach further towards the more pristine landscape of Chulu Far East Base Camp. As you walk this unexplored hidden valley you will witness Bharal (blue sheep), crystal-clear streams, barren world of rock and ice. We will be camping and everything will be organized before your arrival at the base camp. The camping set includes two-member sharing tents, Kitchen tents, Dining tents, toilet tents, etc. However, the camping privileges also vary on the size of the group.

Eventually, we will head out to summit the Chulu Far East Peak. The technical sections of the climb require careful navigation through crevassed terrain and steep snow slopes. The summit push typically starts in the earliest in morning in the dark with headlamps.

After the summit, we head back down to the prosperous town of Manang and proceed further to go over the iconic Thorong La Pass. After the pass, we will descend down to the most sacred town of Muktinath. After Muktinath, we will walk further to the windy valley of Jomsom and fly to the Lake City of Pokhara the next day. The trip concludes with a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world's deepest gorge.

Going over the Thorong La Pass 5,416 m / 17,769 feet:

Another big highlight of the Chulu Far East Expedition is going over the Thorong La Pass, the highest trekking pass in the world. Thorong La stands at a height of 5,416 meters and played a crucial role during the Salt Trade Era. The incredible Thorong La Pass is the iconic high-altitude mountain pass that connects the Manang and Mustang districts.

It stands as a bridge between these two different districts which are unique and have diverse characteristics. The pass offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri ranges, and Mustang peaks. Usually, we go over the Thorong La earliest in the morning in the dark to avoid afternoon winds and ensure clear views from the summit.

Combination of both teahouse and camping experience:

Chulu Far East Expedition delivers you with both TEAHOUSE and CAMPING experience. It presents you with the best of two different worlds, the cozy comfort of teahouses and the experience of wilderness camping. This expedition is certainly designed to provide you with a complete Himalayan experience in Nepal.

  • Teahouse Experience:

Our Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey starts with the iconic Annapurna Circuit trek. Along this classical circuit trail, you will be staying in local traditional teahouses which are basically family-oriented. These local teahouses in the mountains give you an authentic local experience. The teahouses are indeed the extension of their own houses which got improvised with the coming of tourism. This is the reason why all teahouses are in the heart of the traditional Annapurna villages.

It is certainly very fascinating to stay in these local teahouses at the base of high mountains with rustic surroundings. These cozy teahouses provide simple beds and shared dining halls, but delicious meals are prepared with local ingredients and are organic. It is indeed sensational to sit around the warm chimney in the evening and listen to the legends and share your stories.

  • Wilderness Camping Experience:

Gradually leaving the village of Ngawal we will start heading towards the Chulu Base Camp. As we progress towards the wilderness of the mountain to summit the Chulu Far East Peak our accommodations switch from teahouse to Wilderness Camping. Since there are no teahouse facilities at the base camp and onwards we will be camping which becomes your new home. But it will certainly be a new experience to camp in the serenity of the mountains and to enjoy the freshly cooked meals. Imagine sitting outside with a cup of hot steaming tea in a peaceful environment surrounded by the soaring mountains away from the commercial trekking routes. This camping in the wilderness actually brings you closer to the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Our tents will be set up against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and here you can enjoy your solitude and simply meditate in peace. Unlike teahouse trekking here you can get together with your expedition team and prepare meals or laugh at the kitchen. What beats the teahouse trekking is witnessing the night sky which you can only enjoy at camping. There shall be no artificial lights to overshadow the natural starry lights nor the crowd of people to intrude on your solitude.

A free afternoon can be utilized to explore the village or discuss your Expedition coz soon you will be camping in the wilderness and preparing to summit the 6000 meters peak.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Leaving Ngawal we will take off the beaten track towards Yak Kharka, which literally means Alpine Yak Grazing pasture. Today we will leave the prominent Annapurna Circuit Trail and head towards the untouched, rarely trodden valley. We will ascend gradually towards a small settlement of Chulu. As you walk the trail you will be mesmerized by the view.

We ascend further through the forested trail and following the Chulu River we will eventually get to a Himalayan meadow. This serene meadow untouched by mass tourism is Yak Kharkha where we will spend overnight.

  • Accommodation: Local Teahouse
  • Walking Hour: 4 hours

From Yak Kharkha to Chulu Far Ease Base Camp is in reality not much. However, it would take a little longer due to elevation and steep ascent. As you walk the trail you will be impressed by the view of mountains, waterfalls, and the Himalayan meadows. The valley so untouched and pristine makes your day. A couple of hours of continuous steep climb will eventually take us high up to the ridge line from where you will have a great view of Chulu Far East. After the ridge, we will walk the undulating trail towards the valley and eventually reach a wider valley where we will Camp.

By the time we get there our lunch will be organized and after lunch, we will simply relax and enjoy the view. It will be indeed very exciting to experience wilderness camping and enjoy the freshly cooked meals by your camping cook.

Today we will start our day casually with a casual morning breakfast in a tented dining hall. After breakfast, we will chat and enjoy hot tea in this tranquil place of Chlu Far East Base Camp. Later in the morning, our professional Climbing guide will conduct a pre-climbing clinical course or a pre-climbing training. This training is conducted to make you aware of the equipment, climbing styles or skills and emergency protocols. Furthermore, it includes the proper use of equipment, safety measures, etc.

Highlights:

  • Waking up in a tranquil location.
  • Enjoy the clinical courses conducted by your climbing leader.
  • Free afternoon to explore the surroundings.
  • Accommodation: CAMPING
  • Meals: Hot Camping Meals

Today's walk to the High Camp is yet another short day that will take us 600 meters higher than the Chulu Far Ease Base Camp. We are taking this ascending process very slowly so that we can acclimate very well into the thin air. We are best trying here to guarantee a safe passage all the way to the summit without any altitude-related problems.

Being a short day we can start casually today but it all depends on your Climbing Guide decision and your level of fitness. The walk today is more into the moraine and glacier terrain where we pass a small glacial lake. This section changes every year due to the movement of the active glacier underneath the debris. Eventually, we will camp beside the lake. Here you will still have the opportunity to do an acclimatization hike or ask questions relating to tomorrow's plan or question about the clinical course if you are confused about anything.

  • Altitude: 5,400m/17,716 feet
  • Accommodation: CAMPING
  • Walking Hour: 3 hours
  • Meals: Hot Camping Meals
  • Distance: 3 km

Today is our big climb, our main mission and this adventure begins before sunrise. Breaking the pre-dawn silence our assistant guides will give you a wake-up call with hot tea. We will gear up for the big climb and once we finish your early morning breakfast, we will start in the cold dark morning, excited and prepared.

Our climb begins quietly with our boots crunching up the gentle slopes, slowly advancing. The mountain terrain gradually gets challenging presenting before us steeper sections which we will navigate carefully. Gradually we will reach the ridge that will eventually lead us to the summit. This ridge line can be approximately 200 meters in distance which is very thrilling where we take our time, use all our skills, and move safely.

Reaching the top of Chulu Far East is magical. The view is phenomenal and we are surrounded by massive mountains and dramatic landscapes stretching out in every direction. It feels like we are on top of the world. The view of the Annapurna range, Manaslu, Chulu range, Ganesh Himal, and the landscape of Mustang is simply spectacular.

After conquering the Chulu Far East and enjoying the incredible view, we slowly and carefully make our way back down to the Base Camp. At the Base, our team welcomes us with big smiles, congratulations, and hot meals. We will celebrate our accomplishments with songs and hot tea.

It is to Note that it is not just about summiting the peak but it is more about teamwork, courage, and enjoying the incredible beauty of nature.

Today we will retrace our trail back to the trail section of Ngawal. Depending on our schedule we will have lunch at Chulu Village or further down to Braga. The trail is mostly downhill which will eventually connect us with the legendary Annapurna Circuit Trail. Once we get back to the Annapurna Circuit Trail the rest of the trail is effortless. This gradual trail leads us to the ancient village of Braga and eventually gets to the luxurious town of Manang.

Manang is a picturesque village that offers the most panoramic view of the Annapurna range. It is a luxurious town with most facilities as compared to other villages en route. Manang is also called a historic town since the legend states that, Maurice Herzog visited this ancient town in the 1950s in search of food during his quest to conquer the Annapurna I (one).

You will have a Free afternoon and you can explore the town, enjoy cultural or mountain documentary movies in the movie hall, visit a museum or simply relax in the bakery.

We will leave the beautiful town of Manang soon after breakfast. After walking to the end of the town we will cross a bridge and head towards the medieval settlement of Tenji, also known as Old Manang. Another short gradual walk takes us to the basic settlement of Ghunsang. We now hike into the wider valley under the shade of the Chulu range. Walking this beautiful trail we eventually get to Yak Kharka for lunch. Yak Kharka (yak grazing pasture) is a small settlement with only a few lodges.

Highlights:

  • Short walk to Yak Kharka with a free afternoon.
  • You may witness a heard of blue ship.
  • Overnight at the alpine setting with dramatic landscape view.

  • Accommodation: Local Teahouse
  • Walking Hour: 5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Distance: 10 km

Our destination today is pretty short. Leaving Yak Kharka we will still walk the wide meadow trail that leads us to the village of Letder. We continue with the gradual trail and descend to cross a footbridge. Shortly after we will climb a short steep trail to the ridge to the tea shop. The next section is a 45-minute walk which is gradual but tricky. There are a few landslide sections that are marked by signboards and trekkers are requested to be cautious. Everyone is requested to be very watchful while crossing these landslide trails as there have been a few accidents in the previous years.

Soon we will get to Thorong Phedi (base camp) with an exceptional view. After a quick break, we will advance for another 45-minute steep climb to the HIGH CAMP. High Camp is pretty basic with just one big extended lodge. In the afternoon we can walk up the 15-minute hill for an awesome view of the surrounding landscape.

  • Altitude: 4,600 m/15,092 feet
  • Accommodation: Local Teahouse
  • Walking Hour: 3/4 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Distance: 7 km

To get over this beautiful mountain pass, we will start a little early today. Our initial trail starts with gradual up till we get to the solitary isolated tea shop for a short break. As we walk you will witness the line of people walking in the dark mountain trail with their head torches, and this view of lights walking is very fascinating.

The rest of the trail is more like a regular gradual up trail which isn't steep but at this elevation, many will surely be breathless. We further climb to the Thorang La (5416 m/17,769 ft), the highest point in the Annapurna circuit trek. After a quick photo shoot, we will quickly start descending down to Muktinath. We descend at least 1600 meters from the summit of Thorong La to Muktinath. Now we are in a different district of Manang where the landscape is utterly different to the other side of the pass. As we walk down to Muktinath we will have a grand view of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Muktinath Peak, and Mustang Peak.

In the afternoon we will explore Muktinath, a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists.

This will be the most scenic drive from Muktinath to Jomsom. Driving along the winding mountain roadway of Mustang Valley is indeed very fascinating. From Muktinath, we will descend to the ancient town of Kagbeni and then drive along the Kali Gandaki Gorge highway toward Jomsom.

Kali Gandaki River is said to be older than the mountains which cut the Mustang Valley making it the World's Deepest Gorge. Gradually we will get to Jomsom, a beautiful town located under the shade of towering NILGIRI MOUNTAIN and it is a district headquarters of Mustang district. Jomsom is famous for its high wind due to which it assumes the name 'WINDY VALLEY OF NEPAL.

Today is our last night with our local crews so we will be celebrating our achievements of summiting Chulu East and going over the Thorong La safely. Significantly, without the assistance of these Nepali staff things wouldn't have been possible so we say thank you and dance celebrating our last night in the mountains.

The flight cruises through the KALI GANDAKI GORGE, the WORLD'S DEEPEST GORGE which is really fascinating. It is the end of our trekking days for now so we big goodbye to our local staff who will take the local bus back home.

This flight is only 18 minutes but the view of the stunning landscape, the blue roof traditional villages, and the prominent mountains like the Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna range is phenomenal. Essential Trip Information

Best time to climb Chulu Far East Peak:

In Nepal, the traditional prime seasons for climbing any peak have always been spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In similar ways, we still consider the Spring and Autumn seasons favorable for Chulu Far East Peak, 6,059m as well.

These two traditional seasons are believed to offer stable weather and moderate temperatures. However, the biggest issue now is climate change which is noticeably reshaping Nepal’s Trekking Seasons.

Spring Spring brings longer daylights and warmer temperatures it has always been the most prominent season for climbing mountains in Nepal. No wonder mountaineers do high mountain expeditions in Spring including Mount Everest Expedition and Manaslu Expedition. But the spring is not delivering the weather as it used to be. The late Autumn season these days is becoming more noteworthy for its stable conditions.

Now with the Climate Change, Winter (December-February) is increasingly becoming practicable for climbing peaks in Nepal. Though temperature and chill factors can be very challenging they can always be dealt with proper gears. This may be the reason why the local climbers these days favor winter climbing due to stable weather and a guaranteed window to get to the summit.

Climbing Difficulty:

Climbing Chulu Far East Peak (6,059m) is challenging and presents technical mountain climbing challenges. Chulu Far East expedition is very often compared to the famous Island Peak in terms of technicality. However, it is not as busy as Island Peak and offers a more serene climbing experience to the mountaineers. The remote location of Chulu Far East and fewer climbers provide a typical wilderness experience and an authentic high-altitude adventure.

Being a less traveled peak, Chulu Far East retains a distinct and very untouched character as compared to Island Peak or Mera Peak in the Everest region.

Though Chulu Far East is only 6059 meters it requires solid mountaineering skills to navigate its terrain. All essential climbing gear is mandatory including crampons, climbing harnesses, ice axes, fixed ropes, etc. This combination of technical climbing and pristine wilderness makes Chulu Far East an excellent alternative to the more commercial peaks of Nepal.

Overnight at the Sacred Muktinath 3,800 m/12,467 feet

This trip after being a Himalayan adventure is also a spiritual journey. After climbing Chulu Far East we will cross the Thorong La Pass which will take us to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The name itself suggests it is a place of liberation. Thousands of Hindus and Buddhists visit Muktinath every year seeking MOKSHA (salvation). The temple represents a harmonious blend of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal and how they co-exist in harmony.

Muktinath features the famous temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu with 108 water spouts. It also includes an ancient monastery, a huge Buddha statue, The Eternal Flames, etc. The visit to the Lord of Liberation is worth it.

Jomsom 2,720 m/8,923 feet:

We will celebrate our last night at Jomsom, the administrative headquarters of Mustang District. It is a beautiful town surrounded by arid Tibet-like hills and the soaring Nilgiri mountain.

Jomsom is very popularly known as the Windy Valley of Nepal due to its strong winds. It is also known for apple orchards and the Thakali People who are known for their unique culture and delicious Dal Bhat (Nepali Traditional Food.

Jomsom offers stunning views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri peaks and has an airport that is the second most popular mountain airport after Lukla airport in Everest. Being the last night with our crew members we will have dinner together, and celebrate our achievement through local songs and dancing.

Flying through the World’s Deepest Gorge.

Our trip concludes with a scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. Experience the breathtaking mountain flight through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest gorge. This dramatic 20-minute flight cruises through the gorge between the towering massifs of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

As you fly over this gorge you will observe the range of snowcapped Annapurna mountain range, the lush subtropical valleys, vibrant hills, and cultural settlements. The view of the fierce flowing Kali Gandaki River making its way to the gorge looks very fascinating. Eventually, before landing at the finest airport of Pokhara you will witness the holy Mt. Machhapuchare (Mount Fishtail) soaring in the blue sky showing its dominance. The view of Mt. Fishtail and the range of Annapurna massif to either side is really fascinating.

Explore the enchanting city of Pokhara 827m:

Pokhara is the second-largest city and it was recognized as Nepal's Tourism Capital in 2024. It is popularly known as the Lake City since Pokhara sits beside the serene Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range and Mt. Fishtail as its backdrop.

After the Chulu Far East Expedition and being cut out from all civilization for weeks, it is indeed very soothing to get back to luxury. While at Pokhara you will have numerous adventure sports options including Bungee jumping, Zip-lining, Boating, Paragliding, etc. You can also simply relax and enjoy at the lakeside with a relaxing spa or shopping.

A short hike or a drive to the World Peak Pagoda or the second-tallest Shiv Statue at Pumdikot is worth it. These vantage points give you the best aerial view of Pokhara city and the best panoramic view of the snowcapped mountain range that dominates Pokhara city.

A Note on Mountain Safety:

As your trusted Travel Agent in Himalayan adventures, Nepal Pyramids always prioritizes the well-being of our trekkers and Climbers. We all are aware of the fact that the majestic mountains we travel are very unpredictable. There is a beautiful saying that we always want to pass on to our travelers ‘It is not us but nature, that ultimately directs our journey's rhythm’.

We request all our partners that due to the unpredictability of the mountains and the uncertainty our experienced guides and trek leaders hold the authority to execute changes. They have every right to modify the itinerary being flexible under demanding circumstances, weather, physical wellness, or natural events that are beyond our control.

Though our itineraries are crafted carefully and are led by professionals, the remote landscapes we explore may occasionally require new updates and transformations. We are always flexible to any changes that would benefit the entire crew members and our planning framework is just a script that can be revised anytime.

This flexibility that we have is actually born from decades of experience ensuring the safety of the overall crew members. However, all changes and flexibility will be implemented after the proper elucidation and consent from the group.

Risk of Altitude Sickness at Chulu Far East Peak Climbing:

Yes, there is a risk of altitude sickness while doing Chulu Far Ease Peak climbing. While climbing Chulu Far East you can get to a height of 6059 meters which is 19, 978 feet. Getting to this elevation is potentially risky for altitude sickness. As you go higher things can be tricky because the air gets very thin and you need to adapt to this thin-air environment.

AMS or acute mountain sickness can develop into life-threatening HACE and HAPE. However, there are ways to prevent High altitude sickness while doing high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

But the good news is, the Chulu Far East Peak Climbing journey starts with the Annapurna Circuit trek which starts from quite a low elevation. Our itinerary is designed with a slow ascent that will help your body to adapt to the high altitude environment gradually.

Nevertheless, the Annapurna Circuit trek is itself designed with gradual ascent giving you enough time to acclimatize into thin air and create more red blood cells that help carry oxygen.

Furthermore, the things you can do to adapt are:

  • Walk slowly, ascend slowly, and do not rush
  • Listen to the guidelines of your Trek leader
  • Maintain your body with adequate fluid
  • Keep yourself warm
  • Over the counter, you can take Diamox (acetazolamide)

Chulu Far East Climbing via Nar-Phu without Thorong La:

If you're seeking an alternative route for the Chulu Far East Expedition, we would highly recommend through the captivating Nar Phu Valley. Nar Phu Valley is certainly an exceptional option that bypasses the crowded Annapurna Circuit Trail. Furthermore, the below itinerary skips the Thorong La Pass and ends the trip at Manang from where we will drive back to Kathmandu without the pressure of trekking any further into the alpine.

Nar Phu Valley is a hidden gem that delivers a distinctive trekking experience. It is very untouched and less trodden, however, it is a restricted area that requires a Special Trekking Permit. The beauty of choosing Nar Phu Valley will be the utter experience of tranquility and wilderness. It is significantly less commercialized and more pristine compared to the famous Annapurna Circuit trail.
