Upper Mustang Jeep Safari Trip Detail:

Upper Mustang Jeep Safari is an exhilarating adventure that takes you to the remote and mystical region of Upper Mustang in Nepal. Known as the "Forbidden Kingdom," Upper Mustang offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and ancient Tibetan traditions. Here's some information about the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari trip:

Upper Mustang is located in the trans-Himalayan region of Nepal, bordering Tibet. It lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, resulting in a dry and arid landscape.

  • Necessary Permits: Since the Upper Mustang is a restricted area, you will need special permits to enter. These include the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) issued by the Nepalese government. Further, you would require a TIMS permit too. It is advisable to obtain these permits through a registered trekking agency or guide.
  • Mode of Transportation: The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari is typically conducted using 4WD jeeps or SUVs. The rugged terrain and lack of proper roads in most sections make it necessary to use sturdy vehicles that can handle challenging conditions.
  • Highlights of the Trip: The Upper Mustang region is known for its unique landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and preserved Tibetan culture. Some of the highlights of the trip include visiting the walled city of Lo Manthang, exploring ancient cave dwellings, encountering the traditional Thakali and Gurung communities, and witnessing the vibrant Rituals if the timing is right.
  • Accommodation: Along the route, there are teahouses and camping options available for accommodation. However, due to the construction of the Kora La Highway, the infrastructure has been improved and more commercialized as compared to the authenticity Upper Mustang had in the previous years.
  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to undertake the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) and Monsoon seasons. These months offer pleasant weather with clear skies, making it ideal for enjoying the stunning landscapes and exploring the region. However, the Upper Mustang trip is not recommended during the Winter season from late November till the end of February.
  • Physical Fitness and Difficulty Level: The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari involves driving through rough terrain and high-altitude areas. While it doesn't require intense physical exertion like trekking, it's advisable to have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for long drives and occasional bumpy roads.
