The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is the ultimate adventure for trekkers seeking a true off-the-beaten-path experience in Nepal. This restricted area trek takes you deep into the remote northwestern Nepal with unique Himalayan topography. It is one of the least visited trekking destinations that offers you a pristine wilderness.

The second option is by road, it takes 2/3 days drive (approx. 275 km) from Kathmandu to Dunai. But again, if you are flying to Nepalgunj and driving to Dunai, it will take at least 12 hours.

Phoksundo Lake (3612 m / 11850 feet): The Turquoise Jewel of Dolpo

When you are doing the Lower Dolpo Trek, the stunning Phoksundo Lake is the main highlight. This captivating Phoksundo Leka is at a height of 3,612 m / 11,850 feet, and it is Nepal's deepest lake.

The water is interestingly amazing, and trekkers say that it is something so unique they have seen. It is deep turquoise. It is an alpine freshwater lake that glows against the barren landscape and the colorful prayer flags.

Natural Beauty and Mystique

The lake is inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, one of the highly protected Himalayan National Parks in Nepal. A massive waterfall that drops beside the lake actually feeds the lake, and beautiful pine forests cover the surrounding hills.

This deepest lake in Nepal is 145 meters / 476 feet deep. However, the local legend says it is bottomless.

The water is so clear that you can see rocks far below the surface. It is also completely protected. Swimming, fishing, and boating are not allowed. This keeps the lake pure for everyone who comes after you.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

For local Buddhists and Bon practitioners, Phoksundo Lake is sacred.

Small chortens (Buddhist shrines) sit along the shore. Lots of colorful prayer flags stretch between trees and hills. A monastery, Tshowa Gompa (also known as Thasung Tsholing Gompa or the Ringmo Bon Monastery), overlooks the lake from a hilltop.

Legends: Local legends state that a fleeing demoness gave villagers a turquoise gemstone to hide her from a Buddhist saint, Guru Rimpoche, who was chasing her. The villagers betrayed her, and in revenge, the furious demoness flooded the valley, drowning the village that created the Phoksundo Lake today. Later, Guru Rimpoche trapped the demoness beneath the water by a powerful curse.

Monks at the lake still perform regular prayers to keep the demoness's spirit calm and trapped deep beneath the water.

Whether you believe the stories or not, you will certainly feel something when you explore this divine lake. It is quiet. It is old. It is sacred.

Your Rest Day at the Lake

Day 13 is a full rest day at Phoksundo Lake. Do not waste it. Walk the shore. Sit in silence. Visit the monastery. Take many photos. This is the moment you came for.

Flight Delays and Cancellations

The unpredictability of Mountain Flights in Nepal is pretty evident from its history of delays and cancellations. Diverse factors lead to the situation of Delays / Cancellations, including the weather, technical issues, poor visibility, etc. In such conditions, Nepal Pyramids will charter a helicopter to make certain that you don’t miss your trip or your international flight. But again, under these circumstances, the possibility of flying a helicopter depends on the Nepal Civil Aviation flying rules.

Travelers are to pay the cost of the chartered helicopter, which is payable through cash, traveler’s cheques, or credit cards (Visa and Master Cards only). Travelers will be provided with a receipt upon payment so that they may claim the amount from their travel insurance. The cost per person is governed by the number of people taking this facility.

However, it is always very wise to have an extra day in your hand in case of bad weather, delays, or flight cancellations. Though in such cases, we always come up with a possible alternative depending on the situation, however, an extra day always cushions for any such uncertainty that truly redeems you from all the international flight hassles.

Essential Trip Information

Numa La & Bagala La: Conquering the High Passes

The hardest days of the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek are Day 10 and Day 11. You will cross two passes above 5,100 meters in just two days.

Numa La Pass (5,315m / 17,470 feet)

Numa La Pass is the highest point of the entire trek. You wake early at base camp. The climb is steep. The air is thin. Each step feels heavy.
Then you reach the top. Prayer flags whip in the wind. Snow peaks stretch in every direction. Dhaulagiri (8,167m) rises to the south. Kanjiroba (6,883m) stands to the north.
You are standing higher than any point in Europe or North America. It feels like the top of the world.

Bagala La Pass (5,169m / 16,959 feet)

The second pass comes the next day. Your legs are tired from Numa La. But Bagala La is waiting.

The ascent is different. More rocky. More exposed. But the view on the other side is your reward. You drop down into the Phoksundo Lake valley, and suddenly you understand why you came.

Tips for Crossing Both Passes

  • Start early: Leave by 5 or 6 AM. Afternoon clouds and wind make the passes harder.
  • Go slow: There is no prize for speed. Steady steps win this day.
  • Drink water: Dehydration makes altitude sickness worse. Maintain your body with adequate fluid.
  • Trust your guide: They have done this hundreds of times. Follow their pace.

Crossing Numa La and Bagala La is hard. But every trekker who finishes says the same thing: it was worth every step.

Permits Required for Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek

Restricted Area Permit:

The Dolpo region is considered a restricted area for foreign tourists. To trek in this region, you'll need a Restricted Area Permit, which is issued by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. The cost of this permit depends on the trekking duration. However, below is the cost of two separate permits that you would require for the Lower Dolpo Trek.

NOTE: A TIMS Card may be required.

  • Up to 7 days: USD $ 20 per person
  • Additional USD $ 5 per day per person for each day beyond the initial 7 days.

Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit:

The Shey-Phoksundo National Park Permit is required for trekkers and tourists visiting the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. This permit is necessary to enter and explore the national park and the surrounding areas for several reasons. Basically, the permit is for Conservation and Environmental Protection, Cultural and Historical Preservation, Visitor management, etc.

  • USD $ 30 Per Person with no time limit - it's a one-time payment permit.

When is the Best Time to do the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek?

The best time to do the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is during the autumn and spring seasons. These months provide the most favorable weather conditions and offer a fantastic trekking experience. Here's a breakdown of the two recommended trekking seasons:

Autumn (September to November):

  • Best Time: This is considered the prime trekking season for Lower Dolpo. Great weather with clear skies and pleasant temperatures.
  • Temperature: Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) at lower elevations and can drop below freezing at higher altitudes. Nights are colder.
  • Visibility: The clear skies offer excellent visibility of the stunning landscapes, including mountain views.
  • Flora and Fauna: You can witness vibrant autumn colors in the forests, and wildlife activity is often more visible.

Spring (March to May):

  • Second Best Time: Spring is another great season for the Lower Dolpo Trek, with gradually warming temperatures and blossoming flora.
  • Temperature: Daytime temperatures gradually rise, ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Nights are milder than in winter.
  • Flora and Fauna: Rhododendron forests come to life with colorful blooms during this season, making it a visually appealing time to trek.
  • Less Crowded: While not as crowded as autumn, spring sees fewer trekkers compared to the peak seasons in other parts of Nepal.

However, proper clothing and gear are essential to stay warm and comfortable. If you are still confused about the best time to trek in Nepal, see the details here: When to Trek in Nepal.

Avoid trekking in the winter months (December to February) due to extremely cold temperatures, heavy snowfall, and the risk of impassable trails. Similarly, the monsoon season (June to August) is not advisable due to heavy rainfall, landslides, and difficult trekking conditions.

Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek: Complete 17-Day Guide & Itinerary FAQs

  • Lower Dolpo is generally considered less difficult than Upper Dolpo, but it is still a strenuous and physically demanding trek. Lower Dolpo crosses two high passes, Numa La (5,315m) and Bagala La (5,169m), through rugged and remote terrain. Upper Dolpo is significantly more challenging as you reach higher elevations and more technical terrain. Besides, most of the trek is full camping. Upper Dolpo also demands a higher permit cost (USD $50 per person per day) and a more experienced trekking team.

  • Juphal Airport (also spelled Jhupal) is the gateway to the Dolpo region and is accessible only by air. The standard route is a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a second short mountain flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. The Kathmandu-Nepalgunj flight is approximately 55 minutes, and the Nepalgunj-Juphal flight is around 35/40 minutes. Both flights are operated by small aircraft and are highly dependent on weather conditions. It is strongly advisable to keep a buffer days to cushion any such circumstances.

  • No. Independent trekking in the Lower Dolpo region is not permitted. It is a restricted area, and it legally requires all foreign trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed guide from a registered local trekking agency. Attempting to trek without a guide will result in being sent back.

  • Bon is the ancient pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet and the Himalayan highlands. Even today, it is actively practiced in the Dolpo region of Nepal. It is over 3,000 years old. That means it existed long before Buddhism arrived in this region

How is Bon different from Buddhism?

If you generally look at Bon religion, it looks basically like Tibetan Buddhism since both have:

    • Monasteries
    • Prayer flags
    • Chanting
    • Monks in robes

However, there is one easy way to tell them apart. Tibetan Buddhists walk clockwise around any sacred site, whereas the Bon practitioners walk counterclockwise. In Dolpo, villages like Dho Tarap, the Bon monasteries, and lamas have preserved this ancient tradition largely unchanged for centuries. Witnessing Bon culture is one of the most unique cultural experiences the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek offers.

  • The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is a trekking adventure in the remote Dolpo region of Nepal, known for its pristine landscapes and unique Tibetan-influenced culture.

  • The trek typically takes around 15 to 20 days to complete, depending on your starting and ending points and your pace.

  • The best time is during autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). However, Winter (December to February) is not recommended for the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek.

  • Yes, permits are required.
You'll need a Restricted Area Permit and a Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit to trek in this region.

  • Trekking in the Lower Dolpo is only allowed through Legitimate and Registered Local Trekking Agencies and requires a guide who holds a legitimate valid Guiding Licence.

  • The highest point on this trek is the Numa La Pass, which stands at approximately 5,315 meters (17,470 feet) above sea level.

  • Accommodations are basic tea houses/homestay facilities and camping. Tea houses offer simple lodging, and camping may be necessary in some remote areas.

  • Yes, the trek is physically challenging due to high altitudes, rugged terrain, and long walking days. Prior trekking experience and good fitness are recommended.

  • Pack warm clothing, a good-quality sleeping bag, sturdy trekking boots, a waterproof jacket, and essential trekking gear. A detailed packing list is essential.

  • Medical facilities are limited in the Dolpo region, so carry a basic first-aid kit and any personal medications. Helicopter evacuation is available in emergencies.

However, Nepal Pyramids provides you with a comprehensive Medical Kit that has all extensive medication from Paracetamol to Antibiotics and First Aid Supplies.

  • Access to clean drinking water can be challenging. Trekkers typically carry water purification methods or purchase bottled water where available.
