Phoksundo Lake (3612 m / 11850 feet): The Turquoise Jewel of Dolpo
When you are doing the Lower Dolpo Trek, the stunning Phoksundo Lake is the main highlight. This captivating Phoksundo Leka is at a height of 3,612 m / 11,850 feet, and it is Nepal's deepest lake.
The water is interestingly amazing, and trekkers say that it is something so unique they have seen. It is deep turquoise. It is an alpine freshwater lake that glows against the barren landscape and the colorful prayer flags.
Natural Beauty and Mystique
The lake is inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, one of the highly protected Himalayan National Parks in Nepal. A massive waterfall that drops beside the lake actually feeds the lake, and beautiful pine forests cover the surrounding hills.
This deepest lake in Nepal is 145 meters / 476 feet deep. However, the local legend says it is bottomless.
The water is so clear that you can see rocks far below the surface. It is also completely protected. Swimming, fishing, and boating are not allowed. This keeps the lake pure for everyone who comes after you.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
For local Buddhists and Bon practitioners, Phoksundo Lake is sacred.
Small chortens (Buddhist shrines) sit along the shore. Lots of colorful prayer flags stretch between trees and hills. A monastery, Tshowa Gompa (also known as Thasung Tsholing Gompa or the Ringmo Bon Monastery), overlooks the lake from a hilltop.
Legends: Local legends state that a fleeing demoness gave villagers a turquoise gemstone to hide her from a Buddhist saint, Guru Rimpoche, who was chasing her. The villagers betrayed her, and in revenge, the furious demoness flooded the valley, drowning the village that created the Phoksundo Lake today. Later, Guru Rimpoche trapped the demoness beneath the water by a powerful curse.
Monks at the lake still perform regular prayers to keep the demoness's spirit calm and trapped deep beneath the water.
Whether you believe the stories or not, you will certainly feel something when you explore this divine lake. It is quiet. It is old. It is sacred.
Your Rest Day at the Lake
Day 13 is a full rest day at Phoksundo Lake. Do not waste it. Walk the shore. Sit in silence. Visit the monastery. Take many photos. This is the moment you came for.
