The history of curiosity among nature lovers, trekkers, and mountaineers to explore the concealed valleys of Annapurna started after 1950. This ascent of Annapurna 8,091 m/ 26,545 feet, was indeed the first-ever human conquest of the 8,000 m in the history of mountaineering.

The incident, however, generated awareness and motivation among people far and wide to conquer these majestic and mystical Himalayas. Since then, the Annapurna region which was believed to be hidden for so long was eventually revealed to the outside world.

Essential Trip Information

Holy Khayer Lake (4,500m / 14,763 feet):

Excursion to the Holy Khayer Lake is not mandatory and entirely optional. However, the trek to Khayer Lake is very spiritual and it probably takes about 9 hours approximately. We start early in the morning with an amazing view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. A very early wake-up call is set with the packed lunch. Soon after we are done with our quick breakfast we start with the established trial first.

Gradually we get to the alpine undulating trail that eventually leads us to the small but beautiful Holy Khayer Lake (4,500m / 14,763 feet).

This stunning holy lake is very well settled at the base of Varaha Sikhar (Annapurna Fang) (7647m). The Holy Khayer Lake is religiously significant for both Hindus and Buddhists. In the month of August during the full moon of the Janai Purnima festival, thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the lake to worship. Soon we retrace our trail back to our community lodge.

However, anyone withdrawing from the Khayer Lake exploration can always go around the ridge. The ridge has so much to offer including the hike down to the viewpoint of the world’s deepest gorge.

Which is the best season to do the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek?

Traditionally, Spring and Autumn have always been the prime seasons for trekking in Nepal. These two popular seasons are believed to deliver clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and breathtaking views.

The Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek is stunning in the Spring season (March-May) due to the blooming of Rhododendron. With the blooming Rhododendrons, the surrounding landscapes is colorfully painted which simply appears very spectacular.

Autumn gives you a different experience. However, this beautiful AD Trek can be done throughout the year, with each season presenting its unique charm.

In recent years due to climate change, we have witnessed an interesting shift in trekking patterns. Winter (December to February) which was once considered as off-season is now emerging as a favorable trekking season.

These days winter in Nepal is milder making winter treks more manageable. The winter snowfall has considerably decreased to which winter is dry with little or no snowfall. However, winter delivers you very clear skies offering the most stunning mountain and landscape view.

Significantly winter is less crowded which allows trekkers to enjoy solitude and tranquility.

Peak Monsoon is not recommended due to possible landslides and flooding that may result in road blockades and potential risks. Besides the weather can be cloudy with no views and it may also result in domestic flight cancellations. However, trekkers have enjoyed the end of monsoon like the end of August and early September.

Accommodation at Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek:

Accommodation along the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek is simple and basic and will provide trekkers with a genuine taste of local hospitality. Besides Ghorepani which is an established town, we will be staying at basic local teahouses. The Khopra Ridge route isn’t as commercial as other popular trekking designations of Nepal, thus local teahouse accommodations have become an integral part of this trip.

These teahouses are family-oriented lodges that are nothing but an extension of their own houses or their summer settlements. They will have simple twin-sharing rooms, which are usually simple with limited amenities but a welcoming atmosphere. They may surely have Wi-Fi, warm dining, and device charging facilities. However, it is important to note that as you ascend to higher, the facilities become more basic but gives you the taste of raw wilderness.

At the Annapurna Dhaulagiri route, we will find more community-built lodges which is why this trek is also called Community Teahouse Trek. These lodges are constructed and managed by local villages. They are finely managed but booking has to be done beforehand due to its limited room availability. Staying in these lodges supports local economies and the local community.

No matter what the accommodation is like you will be mesmerized by the beauty and the trekking experience this trek will offer.
