Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek FAQs

  • Annapurna South Base Camp Trek is a trekking route that takes you to the BASE of the Annapurna South (7,219 m) mountain which is 4050 meters high in elevation. This section of the trek is very newly established and it is less trodden giving you the feeling of off-the-beaten-track experience. It is a challenging and rewarding trek that takes you to the base camp of Annapurna South, one of the peaks in the Annapurna range, and to the Hidden Lake, which is considered sacred by the locals. This Epic trek offers stunning views of the Annapurna massif and the deep valleys.

PLEASE DO NOT MISTAKE IT FOR REGULAR ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP TREK

  • The best time to do the trek is in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is clear, dry, and stable, and the views are spectacular. The spring season also offers the opportunity to see the rhododendron forests in full bloom, adding more color and beauty to the scenery. The Summer (June - August) and Winter seasons (December to February) are not recommended due to heavy rainfall and possibility of landslides and the high chill factor in winter.

  • The trek follows a tea house route, which means that you can find many guest houses and lodges along the way, where you can rest and eat. However, at places like Dobato and Annapurna South Base Camp, the accommodation is basic, as this trail is very new and there are only a few teahouses, some of which are still under construction or incomplete.

However, the accommodation is pretty comfortable, with twin beds, blankets, pillows, and shared bathrooms. Some places have hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities, but they may charge extra for these services. But this please do keep your expectations low at Annapurna South Base Camp.

The food is simple but tasty, with a variety of Nepali and international dishes, such as dal bhat, momo, noodles, soup, pizza, pasta, etc.

  • The trekkers need to obtain two permits for this trek: the TIMS card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. The TIMS card costs NPR 2,000 (US$17) and the ACAP permit costs NPR 3,000 (US$25) for all trekkers. The permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or from authorized trekking agencies. However, Nepal Pyramids organized all paper works prior to your arrival in Kathmandu.

  • Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek is a rewarding and adventurous trek that offers a unique and less crowded perspective of the Annapurna region. However, it is not an easy trek and it requires good preparation, a reasonable fitness level, and a positive attitude to overcome the difficulties and enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas.

The Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek is a relatively new and less crowded trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is an extension of the classic Annapurna Base Camp Trek that takes you to the south face of Annapurna I (8091m), the tenth-highest mountain in the world, and the hidden lake.

The difficulty level of the Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek can be considered moderate to challenging, depending on your fitness level, experience, and weather conditions. The trek involves walking for 6 to 7 hours per day on average.

The main challenges of the Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek are the high altitude, the steep and rocky terrain, the long and exhausting days, and the unpredictable weather. The trek reaches an elevation of 4300 meters at Hidden Lake, which is higher than the Annapurna Base Camp (4130m). This means that there is a risk of altitude sickness, which can cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To prevent and cope with altitude sickness, it is important to acclimatize properly, drink plenty of water, eat well, and descend if the symptoms worsen. The terrain of the trek is also challenging, as it involves walking over rough and uneven paths, crossing streams and bridges, climbing and descending steep slopes, and traversing glaciers and snowfields. The trek requires a good level of physical fitness, stamina, and endurance, as well as some prior trekking experience.
