Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek Overview.

Come and join us for a newly opened trekking destination in the region of Annapurna, The Hidden Lake Trek. The Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek is certainly a hidden gem that is still a virgin trek that leads travelers to a heaven-like place. It is a beautiful journey that takes you to the heart of the Annapurna region through the untouched valley.

The Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek is also now known as the Annapurna South Base Camp Trek. Since this enchanting hidden lake falls at the base of the Annapurna South mountain (7219 m) the locals are trying to rename it as Annapurna South Base Camp route. This off-the-beaten trek offers a delightful experience taking adventurers through rugged trails, lush forests, and picturesque villages.

The trek takes you to the land of the GURUNG and MAGAR who inhabit the region. The Gurungs are the largest ethnic group in the region and have their own language and a unique culture. They are believed to have migrated from Mongolia and have a history of being merciless soldiers in the British Army. Their belief system is a blend of Buddhism, Hinduism, and their own personal cult. Trekkers to them are special guests and they welcome them with open arms.

Please do not mistake this for the regular Annapurna Base Camp - This is Annapurna South Base Camp which is 4050 m / 13,287 feet at the base of Annapurna South Mountain which is 7,219 m / 23,684 feet.

Progressively, this classic trek takes you to PODO the base of the towering Annapurna South mountain. On the way to PODO or Annapurna South Base Camp at 4050 m / 13,287 feet, the trail gradually ascends with the most dramatic landscape view. This Himalayan meadow below the gigantic Mt. Annapurna South (7,219 meters) offers a most beautiful panoramic view where we will spend overnight.

However, the highlight of this trek is a side excursion to the serene Hidden Lake the next day. It is certainly a hidden jewel that is secluded and nestled amidst the majestic Himalayan landscape. Its crystal waters reflect the heavenly clouds across the mountains. As we take this pristine mountain trail it gives us the chance to witness the raw natural beauty of Annapurna in its purest form. The Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek, a newly introduced trekking destination truly gives anyone the genuine off-the-beaten-path experience.

About Mt. Annapurna South 7,219 m / 23,684 feet

Mt. Annapurna South, which stands at the height of 7,219 meters / 23,684 feet, is one of the majestic peaks in the Annapurna massif. It is one of the most prominent peaks that comes to your view right from the time you land in Pokhara. Doesn't matter which part of Annapurna foothills you are doing be it, ABC Trek, Mardi Himal, Khopra Ridge, Poon Hill, orMohare Danda Trek, Annapurna South becomes a prominent part. It dominates the entire region and takes away the limelight in all of these treks. Annapurna South is the 5th highest mountain in the Annapurna range and it is known for its breathtaking beauty as compared to other towering peaks over 7,000 meters.

To date, the surrounding foothills of Annapurna South have been a haven for trekkers from around the world. It offers a diverse range of trails that take you to picturesque landscapes, dramatic forest settings, terraced fields, and traditional villages. Any Annapurna foothills trek showcases Annapurna South very attractive along with other peaks like Annapurna I, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and Hiunchuli. There are ample photographs of this majestic mountain shining in the skyline either during the sunrise, sunset, with clouds, or against the blue sky.

Annapurna South's beauty isn't confined to its summit; its presence in the skyline adds to the glamour of the Nepalese Himalayas. Its snow-capped peak and rugged terrain stand as a testimony to the raw power and awe-inspiring beauty of nature. The beauty of Annapurna South captivates adventurers and nature lovers alike.

However, climbing Annapurna South is not without risks. The first ascent of Annapurna South was made by the Japanese Expedition. It was in the year 1964, on October 15, Shiochiro Uyeo ( Japan ) and Mingma Tsering Sherpa with other Japanese crew members got to the summit successfully. This peak is renowned among mountaineers for its technical difficulty and demanding climbs. The challenging weather conditions, high altitude, avalanches, and technical difficulties demand skills, experience, and preparation. Despite all these Annapurna South is certainly a most attractive mountain within the Annapurna range.

Trek Summary.

Our Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek Starts with a scenic flight to the beautiful city of POKHARA. It is a short 25-minute flight, but the view and scenic beauty you see on the flight's course are mesmerizing. Pokhara is a lake city nestled beside the serene Phewa Lake which was declared the Tourism Capital City of Nepal on March 17, 2024. We will explore this paradise-like city that offers you a magnificent view of the Annapurna range, with the iconic FISHTAIL (Mt. Machapurchare) dominating the skyline.

The next day, we will take yet another scenic drive to the village of Ghandruk. Ghandruk happens to be the biggest GURUNG village with traditional houses, ample teahouses, museums, etc. This 2.5-hour drive offers you a great mountain view, charming traditional Gurung and Magar villages, terraced farming fields, and a rustic way of life. As we reach the village of Ghandruk you will be amazed to witness the picturesque setting adorned by the towering Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

Shortly after we will take our first-day hike through the narrow lanes of Ghandruk and enter into the lush forested trail. With an undulating trail and steep ascent through the dramatic forest setting, we will get to Tadapani. This small settlement gives you the best sunrise view. From Tadapani we will once again walk the dense Rhododendron forest and head towards Dobato. The next morning we will wake up early for the stunning sunrise view from Mulde viewpoint at 3637 meters. After Breakfast, leaving Dobato we will walk the most untouched valley ridge towards PODO or Annapurna South Base Camp.

The walk to Podo or Annapurna South Base Camp is incredibly dramatic. This is a newly opened trail and very few have trekked the region to date. As you walk along this untouched trail you will be greeted by spectacular landscape views and wildlife. We will slowly ascend toward the plateau which is a wide Himalayan meadow. Few basic teahouses with basic facilities. Despite its basicness, the raw wilderness it delivers to the trekkers is remarkable. After lunch, we will simply relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of nature.

The next morning we will go on a side excursion to our final destination, the HIDDEN LAKE, a secluded jewel. After the excursion, we will spend a free afternoon once again enjoying the wild beauty of the region. Now we will descend a NEWLY ESTABLISHED TRAIL to Tribune Danda, a beautiful untouched ridge with a great view.

The trek concludes with a drive to Pokhara and an overnight stay at the hotel. We will take another scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

Annapurna Hidden Lake Trek FAQs

  • Annapurna South Base Camp Trek is a trekking route that takes you to the BASE of the Annapurna South (7,219 m) mountain which is 4050 meters high in elevation. This section of the trek is very newly established and it is less trodden giving you the feeling of off-the-beaten-track experience. It is a challenging and rewarding trek that takes you to the base camp of Annapurna South, one of the peaks in the Annapurna range, and to the Hidden Lake, which is considered sacred by the locals. This Epic trek offers stunning views of the Annapurna massif and the deep valleys.

PLEASE DO NOT MISTAKE IT FOR REGULAR ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP TREK

  • The best time to do the trek is in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is clear, dry, and stable, and the views are spectacular. The spring season also offers the opportunity to see the rhododendron forests in full bloom, adding more color and beauty to the scenery. The Summer (June - August) and Winter seasons (December to February) are not recommended due to heavy rainfall and possibility of landslides and the high chill factor in winter.

  • The trek follows a tea house route, which means that you can find many guest houses and lodges along the way, where you can rest and eat. However, at places like Dobato and Annapurna South Base Camp, the accommodation is basic, as this trail is very new and there are only a few teahouses, some of which are still under construction or incomplete.

However, the accommodation is pretty comfortable, with twin beds, blankets, pillows, and shared bathrooms. Some places have hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities, but they may charge extra for these services. But this please do keep your expectations low at Annapurna South Base Camp.

The food is simple but tasty, with a variety of Nepali and international dishes, such as dal bhat, momo, noodles, soup, pizza, pasta, etc.

  • The trekkers need to obtain two permits for this trek: the TIMS card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. The TIMS card costs NPR 2,000 (US$17) and the ACAP permit costs NPR 3,000 (US$25) for all trekkers. The permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or from authorized trekking agencies. However, Nepal Pyramids organized all paper works prior to your arrival in Kathmandu.

  • Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek is a rewarding and adventurous trek that offers a unique and less crowded perspective of the Annapurna region. However, it is not an easy trek and it requires good preparation, a reasonable fitness level, and a positive attitude to overcome the difficulties and enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas.

The Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek is a relatively new and less crowded trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is an extension of the classic Annapurna Base Camp Trek that takes you to the south face of Annapurna I (8091m), the tenth-highest mountain in the world, and the hidden lake.

The difficulty level of the Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek can be considered moderate to challenging, depending on your fitness level, experience, and weather conditions. The trek involves walking for 6 to 7 hours per day on average.

The main challenges of the Annapurna South Base Camp and Hidden Lake Trek are the high altitude, the steep and rocky terrain, the long and exhausting days, and the unpredictable weather. The trek reaches an elevation of 4300 meters at Hidden Lake, which is higher than the Annapurna Base Camp (4130m). This means that there is a risk of altitude sickness, which can cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To prevent and cope with altitude sickness, it is important to acclimatize properly, drink plenty of water, eat well, and descend if the symptoms worsen. The terrain of the trek is also challenging, as it involves walking over rough and uneven paths, crossing streams and bridges, climbing and descending steep slopes, and traversing glaciers and snowfields. The trek requires a good level of physical fitness, stamina, and endurance, as well as some prior trekking experience.
