Think Twice Before Doing Kanchenjunga or Makalu as a Solo Female Trekker

Both Kanchenjunga and Makalu are considered remote, untouched, off the beaten path, but very stunning valleys at the same time. However, it is very important to note that these two treks are not like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna. These remote valleys are less travelled, and the facilities are very basic.

When it comes to facilities like teahouses, health clinics, food variety, and easy accessibility, it's nothing like the other popular destinations of Nepal. You will walk for hours, sometimes an entire day, without seeing another trekker or a local along the trail.

There are no shops, no phone signal, and the possibility of emergency help or rescue is limited. In cases of any emergencies, there shall be no such thing as prompt help, it could take days. While trekking, if you are not camping, the most crucial thing is the teahouses, the accommodations here are basic.

The possibility of rooms with attached bathrooms, hot showers, and meeting up with another fellow trekker is none. For a solo woman without a guide, this level of isolation can feel overwhelming, even frightening.

Another important factor is the trails, which are poorly marked in many sections, so getting lost is a real risk. This is the reason why a female guide or a trek leader who knows the route is very crucial when you are thinking of trekking solo to the Kenchenjunga and Makalu regions.

We highly recommend having a professional guide if you are thinking of doing Kanchenjunga or Makalu solo.

Special Note:

If you choose a remote trek:

  • Always hire a professional guide or a Female Trek Guide, book at least 2 months early.
  • If possible, carry a satellite phone since there are no mobile signals for days in many places.
  • Notify your family and friends about your exact plan before leaving
  • Do not try trekking in these regions alone, as these treks need a guide by law
  • Prepare for basic facility: basic accommodation, basic food, no hot showers, squat toilets, etc

Remote treks are incredibly beautiful. But they are not for first-timers. Save them for your second or third trip to Nepal.

Special Note for Island Peak or Mera Peak (Solo Female Climbers)

Island Peak or Mera Peak are 'Trekking Peaks' which are over 6,000m. It goes beyond normal trekking, which requires physical and mental preparation. Furthermore, it's a physically demanding adventure that can range from very hard to strenuous.

  • Requires climbing equipment like crampons, a harness, ropes, an ice axe, etc.
  • Previous trekking experience at 5,000m+ will be an added advantage.
  • A climbing guide is a must, for which a climbing bonus of $150 is mandatory.
  • Extra cost: $550 - 700 for climbing gear, camping, hot meals during camping, and a climbing permit.
